About The Gurdjieff Community of Austin
The Gurdjieff Community of Austin is dedicated to the correct and faithful transmission of the teachings of George Ivanovich Gurdjieff, the Armenian mystic and teacher, applied to the world of today. Gurdjieff created a System colloquially known as “The Work”, in which there are several forms: Ideas, Workdays, Music and Movements. Each were intended by him to be understood and worked on together in order to establish a growth of being that would be more permanent and could be carried into one’s daily life.
These practices are true for today and the future, and they are truly remarkable in their ability to change one's own personal level of being. Through the daily practice of these forms, plus the addition of the meditation work from Jeanne de Salzmann and Mr. Gurdjieff himself, it is possible over time to accumulate a substance in oneself that becomes more and more permanent, and which Mr.Gurdjieff described as a “Permanent I” or “Master” within oneself. Without this “I” we are constantly at the beck and call of every association, emotion, or movement that comes our way. We are slaves to everything, with no attention to call our own.
Through study and practice it is possible to change this condition and become more aware both of oneself and one’s surroundings. With this growth of understanding in all three centers of the body comes growth of being. It is important to note that this is not an endeavor for the faint hearted, and requires dedication, patience and time. Change comes as a product of awareness and cannot be pushed or cheated. A real wish, honesty, an ability to “smell” the truth, and the bravery to observe it are necessary. This is not knowledge that can be acquired from books, but must be passed down from a practicing teacher.
The teachers of the Gurdjieff Community of Austin are experienced, knowledgeable and have a thorough practical knowledge acquired from years of study at the Gurdjieff Foundations left by Mr. Gurdjieff himself, and can provide conditions for the growth of individual being as well as counsel and help.
